Almanac: Skuhuks and the Green Plagues of Isdraia

Urgent warning about the Skuhuks of the Omniscient Archive

Starting from Bruck, nestled in the heart of Isdraia and defying the current of the Elendar, a council of several dozen scholars works tirelessly to gather and document both historical knowledge and contemporary events. Thanks to generous patronage of the mayor, ample resources are available, allowing for an unprecedented scale of archiving. Thus emerges the greatest and most comprehensive repository of knowledge in all of Isdraia. From this endeavor arises an institution that shall henceforth be known as The Omniscient Archive.

On behalf of the chief cartographer, a wide variety of historical writings and travel reports from the past 100 tides have been compiled and researched. The local record is intended to provide a contemporary overview of the peoples, groups and creatures of Isdraia. This chapter describes the Skuhuk people. Findings are compiled based on three recent travel reports and ancient writings from times past.

Settlement area

The Skuhuks occupy a presumably significant portion of northwestern Isdraia. They refer to their territory as Skuh-Be'Tak. Unlike the more civilised peoples of Isdraia, few of them speak Mid Air. Instead, their atrophied lips form primitive sounds that are supposed to constitute a form of communication known as ‘Skuhog’. They cannot pronounce the letter S and instead use a rather vicious Z. It is therefore not surprising that they give their territory a name that a normal citizen of Bruck would find almost impossible to pronounce. There are indeed some Skuhuks who also live in Bruck. They have largely adapted to the standards that prevail here, or at least attempted not to fail at doing so.

Regardless of this, Skuh-Be'Tak is populated by various tribes of Skuhuks. The tribe of the One-Ears seems to dominate and has been observed most frequently in both the older and more recent past. Other tribes also seem to have existed before many tides, but their whereabouts are uncertain. As far as Skuh-Be'Tak is concerned, little is known about the exact boundaries and centres of the settlement. It is also difficult to estimate how far the Skuhuks' habitat extends in different directions. Recent sightings of the green pests are increasing in the immediate vicinity of Eimh. One of these sightings even ended fatally.

Appearance

It is inconceivable that any earthly creature could look at a Skuhuk and not recognise that it is looking at a Skuhuk. The skin covering their bodies is usually a modern green, or greyish-brownish depending on the tribe. Their ears – if they still have them at all, after all, they are not called One-Ears for no reason – are oversized, usually long and pointed. All of them are afflicted with a skin disease called notts. They grow, like bumps, and spread more and more. The notts are more pronounced among the males of the Skuhuks species. Older writings suggest that the female specimens have a kind of aesthetic sense and therefore remove the bumps. Some voices in the Omniscient Archive doubt whether so much can be expected of them.

Apart from the notts, at least the One-Ears differ significantly depending on sex. For the other tribes, only anecdotal evidence is available. The males of the One-Ears are usually thin and even appear frail. The females of their species, on the other hand, are well cared for and corpulent. Apparently, they want to increase their fertility this way.

In any case, Skuhuks not only look hideous, but they also all stink.

Nature and practices

What the Skuhuks call their language has already been written about. But it should be mentioned that the primitive, backward roaring and babbling that comes out of their green mouths has a certain origin: resentment. And this resentment is not only evident in the sounds the Skuhuks make. Both individually and as a whole, they are a people who are hostile towards the world. They do not simply react with anger and violence, they initiate it.

Many ancient writings discuss the resentment of the Skuhuks. Is it the pain that the notts cause? Is it their underdeveloped brains? Are there secrets that are beyond our comprehension and perhaps always will be? For today's purposes, it may suffice to know that Skuhuks are generally considered the most dangerous people in Isdraia. This is not only because of their propensity for violence. First and foremost, they are unpredictable and therefore a problem.

Apart from the obvious risky aspects of the Skuhuks, it can also be observed that they have an unusual preference for pointed objects. Finds suggest a veritable collecting mania: entire boxes full of green-skin jewellery have been examined. Among other things, they contained spearheads, fishhooks, files, arrowheads, nails, sewing needles and pitchforks.

The oldest existing documents even suggest that the Skuhuks have an inherent culture. They interpret meaningful rituals in vague detail. According to them, the fact that the one-eared Skuhuks have only one ear is not a coincidence, but a custom to manifest their belonging to the tribe. Based on other findings, the Omniscient Archive doubts whether conscious action can be expected from green-skinned beings.

Current developments

In the current developments surrounding the Skuhuks, one significant incident cannot be overlooked. In its external reporting, the Omniscient Archive Archive does not claim to address such incidents and losses - out of natural sympathy for those left behind. Here, it serves as evidence to underscore the urgency of caution required when dealing with the Skuhuks.

A few darkenings ago, an archivist was killed on an expedition, even though he was accompanied by guards. His two companions were well-trained fighters and, according to their statements, had difficulty defending themselves against a Skuhuk attack. On their way to the Spearhills, the group was ambushed from behind and the archivist was so severely wounded that he died. The incident occurred immediately after crossing the Eimh. At least, that is what the field report and statements from the guards suggest. If this belief is to be accepted, the green threat is gradually advancing, increasingly towards the south. Border violations and conflicts with the Fenn could follow. And perhaps at some point they will be here at Elendar.
